Our Racial History

Cover of Unveiling Our Truth: A Racial History of St. Margaret's Episcopal ChurchUnveiling Our Truth: A Racial History of St.Margaret’s Episcopal Church is a report, published in February 2025, whose purpose is to uncover and share the history of the parish with respect to race and racism, in accordance with “Toward Repentance and Reparations in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington,” a resolution passed by the Episcopal Diocese of Washington in 2023.

This report was prepared by members of St. Margaret’s Racial Justice Task Force, which was established in July 2022 with a vision to “build and support a beloved community that addresses racial injustice…while growing as a community of reconcilers, justice-makers, and healers.” That group’s mission further commits the parish to ensuring that action steps emerging from learning and formation are “identified, prioritized, carried out, evaluated, and communicated” in alignment with The Episcopal Church’s “Becoming Beloved Community” framework. Since its formation, Racial Justice Task Force (now the Racial Justice Committee) has led substantial parish-wide efforts in education, formation, historical inquiry, pilgrimage, and community engagement. One of the group’s most significant projects has been producing this report.

This report seeks to recount St. Margaret’s history truthfully, acknowledging both the contributions we’ve made toward dismantling racism as well as our complicity in furthering racism, so as to inform our ongoing journey toward God’s vision of what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the beloved community.
