DESCRIPTION:Addicted to the Woe: Reimagining the Black Experience through Personal Narrative and Readings to Counteract the Tropes on Being Black in America\n\nThe assumptions and stereotypes of being Black in America are often ones of crime\, poverty\, violence\, and failure to achieve. The results of these inaccurate beliefs about Blacks in America may either reinforce bigotry or justify unintentional but self-serving charity\, pity\, and a “savior complex” from the majority culture in the country. Join parishioner Gene Batiste as he discusses an often unused counter narrative focused on the growth\, joys\, and struggles of just one Black man growing up differently that counters these images. Through personal narrative\, poetry and prose\, and audience participation\, Gene\, a life-long educator\, draws us into the tension between one strong upper middle class Black family narrative focused on awakenings\, joy\, and self-actualization vs. the injurious forces of internalized racism\, shame\, and racist tropes that are pervasive in the U.S. For more information email the Rev. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Evenings\, February 21\, 28\, March 6\, 13\, 20\, 27 6:30 to 8:00 \nShare a meal of soup and bread before joining a discussion of ancient and\npersonal lament\, led by the Rev. Dr. Robert Phillips\, Canon for Leadership Development\nand Congressional Care in the Diocese of Washington. \nSacred texts tell us that in times of crisis the ancient Israelites used images\,\nsymbols\, and metaphors to express the pain of their trauma. The Book of Psalms in\nHebrew Scripture encompasses the vast range of emotions experienced by a people\nwho had a relationship with God that was sometimes strong and resilient\, but often\nfragile and tenuous. In fragile and tenuous times\, they embraced lament psalms as a\nsacred poetry with which they could complain to God in faith. When we lament the\nprofound losses in our lives\, we can avoid tendencies of denial that distort our\nunderstanding and corrupt our ability to move toward healing and wholeness. \nDuring this Lenten season\, we will embark on a journey toward the development\nof our own personal lament psalms using symbols\, metaphors\, and images to facilitate\nan honest spiritual dialogue. SUMMARY:Embracing Lament: Six-Week Lenten Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Evenings\, February 21\, 28\, March 6\, 13\, 20\, 27 6:30 to 8:00 \nShare a meal of soup and bread before joining a discussion of ancient and\npersonal lament\, led by the Rev. Dr. Robert Phillips\, Canon for Leadership Development\nand Congressional Care in the Diocese of Washington. \nSacred texts tell us that in times of crisis the ancient Israelites used images\,\nsymbols\, and metaphors to express the pain of their trauma. The Book of Psalms in\nHebrew Scripture encompasses the vast range of emotions experienced by a people\nwho had a relationship with God that was sometimes strong and resilient\, but often\nfragile and tenuous. In fragile and tenuous times\, they embraced lament psalms as a\nsacred poetry with which they could complain to God in faith. When we lament the\nprofound losses in our lives\, we can avoid tendencies of denial that distort our\nunderstanding and corrupt our ability to move toward healing and wholeness. \nDuring this Lenten season\, we will embark on a journey toward the development\nof our own personal lament psalms using symbols\, metaphors\, and images to facilitate\nan honest spiritual dialogue.
