SUMMARY:Advent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for the upcoming Christmas season\, the Holy Spirit reminds us to include time and space in that preparation for spiritual reflection and discovery\, both alone and in community. To that end\, St. Margaret’s will again this year hold an in-person Advent retreat\, “The Darkness that Leads to Life: Advent as a Gateway for Spiritual Growth.” The retreat will take place at the home of Linda Heaney\, 3272 Aberfoyle Place NW\, in Washington DC\, on Friday evening\, December 8\, and Saturday morning and afternoon\, December 9. The cost is $50\, to cover three meals and snacks\, as well as materials. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. There will be time for socializing\, sharing meals\, facilitator-led activities\, small group discussions\, personal reflection\, worship and prayer.  Since there is limited capacity and we need to have an advance sense of how many will participate for logistical purposes\, you are asked to register your intention to participate in the retreat at this link by no later than Friday\, December 1.  For further information\, please email the Rev. Diana Gustafson  or Ron Lorentzen.

SUMMARY:A Christian Response to Political Polarization
DESCRIPTION:This two-hour learning activity is for Christians who are concerned about the increasingly angry and hostile political climate they see around them and who would like guidance on how to respond. During the workshop\, we will discuss how Biblical teachings are relevant to toxic political polarization and explore ways to apply those teachings to a variety of situations.  Overall\, the emphasis of our time together is on elevating our faith above politics so that we approach the problem of polarization as Christians and not as supporters of a particular political perspective. The workshop is sponsored by Braver Angels\, a non-partisan national organization focused on helping to bridge the political divide in our country. More information about Braver Angels can be found here. Email the Rev. Diana Gustafson with questions. Please click here to register and make a $15.00 payment toward lunch. (Use drop-down >>> Special Purpose).

SUMMARY:Black History Month Forum
DESCRIPTION:Addicted to the Woe: Reimagining the Black Experience through Personal Narrative and Readings to Counteract the Tropes on Being Black in America\n\nThe assumptions and stereotypes of being Black in America are often ones of crime\, poverty\, violence\, and failure to achieve. The results of these inaccurate beliefs about Blacks in America may either reinforce bigotry or justify unintentional but self-serving charity\, pity\, and a “savior complex” from the majority culture in the country. Join parishioner Gene Batiste as he discusses an often unused counter narrative focused on the growth\, joys\, and struggles of just one Black man growing up differently that counters these images. Through personal narrative\, poetry and prose\, and audience participation\, Gene\, a life-long educator\, draws us into the tension between one strong upper middle class Black family narrative focused on awakenings\, joy\, and self-actualization vs. the injurious forces of internalized racism\, shame\, and racist tropes that are pervasive in the U.S. For more information email the Rev. Diana Gustafson or Gene Batiste.

SUMMARY:Embracing Lament: Six-Week Lenten Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Evenings\, February 21\, 28\, March 6\, 13\, 20\, 27 6:30 to 8:00 \nShare a meal of soup and bread before joining a discussion of ancient and\npersonal lament\, led by the Rev. Dr. Robert Phillips\, Canon for Leadership Development\nand Congressional Care in the Diocese of Washington. \nSacred texts tell us that in times of crisis the ancient Israelites used images\,\nsymbols\, and metaphors to express the pain of their trauma. The Book of Psalms in\nHebrew Scripture encompasses the vast range of emotions experienced by a people\nwho had a relationship with God that was sometimes strong and resilient\, but often\nfragile and tenuous. In fragile and tenuous times\, they embraced lament psalms as a\nsacred poetry with which they could complain to God in faith. When we lament the\nprofound losses in our lives\, we can avoid tendencies of denial that distort our\nunderstanding and corrupt our ability to move toward healing and wholeness. \nDuring this Lenten season\, we will embark on a journey toward the development\nof our own personal lament psalms using symbols\, metaphors\, and images to facilitate\nan honest spiritual dialogue. By writing our own lament\, we build a bridge from the\npainful grief of personal brokenness to a space imbued with grace for personal healing\nand growth. \nThe series will conclude with at Service of Lament on March 27. \nSign up here for one or all of the sessions and to bring soup or bread or join the discussion via Zoom at 7:00 p.m. \nZoom Link \nMeeting ID: 894 7798 8351 \nPasscode: 928572 \nEmail the Rev. SUMMARY:Forum: Loving Your Neighbors through Medical Debt Relief
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by St. Margaret’s Racial Justice Task Force and Faith in Action Committee \nOne in three adults in the US have medical debt. It spurs individual bankruptcies and stops people from seeking necessary health care. Black\, Indigenous and People of Color are more likely to be saddled with medical debt. In DC\, Black residents are 300 percent more likely than white residents to be burdened by medical debt. The racial justice and health equity implications of medical debt are significant and alarming. \nJoin us for our forum\, when we will hear from experts about the policy\, legal and personal implications of medical debt and how we at St. Margaret’s can take swift action to lift this burden from our neighbors most in need in DC and neighboring counties. The discussion will feature Eva Stahl\, VP for Public Policy & Program Management at RIP Medical Debt\, the nonprofit that has abolished $10.4 billion of US medical debt; and representatives from Tzedek DC\, a legal aid agency that helps DC residents with legal problems arising from debt and Temple Sinai of Washington DC\, which recently concluded a successful medical debt relief campaign. Our Rector\, Richard M. Weinberg\, will reflect on how medical debt relief is theologically grounded and aligned with St. M’s racial justice values. \nThe forum will kick off St. M’s campaign to raise at least $10\,000\, eliminating $1 million or more in medical debt in the District of Columbia\, Montgomery County and Prince George’s County\, by leveraging RIP Medical Debt’s process of buying bundled medical debt at a deep discount. We hope you will join this worthy effort to show focused and tangible love for our neighbors by lifting the financial burdens of disproportionate medical debt on their journey to improved health and wellbeing! \nJoin in the Nave or online via Zoom. \nZoom Link \nZoom Meeting ID: 935 9524 6192 \nPasscode: 596538
