Pastoral Care
At the heart of any parish is the parish's heart; which is to say, "How do we love the tender, the hurting, and vulnerable among us? How do we share the love of Christ quietly and consistently with one another?" The ministries of pastoral care answer these questions by providing guidance, by providing comfort, and by refusing to let go from our midst those members unable to participate in the fellowship of St. Margaret's for reasons beyond their control. And it is completely fitting that those seeking a place in the ordained ministry of the Episcopal Church are mentored under this aspect of our faith ministry. Please enjoy exploring the ministries of Support & Prayer!

Healing Ministry
At St. Margaret's we have healing at the rail on the second and fourth Sundays of each month during the singing of a healing hymn. Our healers are both clergy and lay. We encourage people to come forward for healing for themselves and for others. They may offer a brief explanation of why they have come, or simply say nothing. We encourage the congregation to pray with us. Finally, it is understood that this is not a private confession. It is important that, when a pastoral issue is involved, the rector is told so that she can follow up with the person later. This is an important ministry for St. Margaret's: One in which our members silently and sincerely participate in through their supportive prayers and singing of a hymn specially selected for this portion of the service.

Companions
The goal of St. Margaret’s Companions is to reach out to and walk with anyone who is navigating old age or experiencing illness or loss and/or may be physically restricted from joining parish community activities. The Companions Program is an outgrowth of Spiritual Companions sponsored by Last Acts, an initiative of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to improve care at the end of life. In addition to the initial trained group of companions, a second group of six parishioners were trained in January 2005 to help ease the loneliness, grief, sadness and fear that can plague the lives of the aged and sick.
Training and coordination of the program is provided by Judith Bowes LICSW. Please call Susan Blue (202.232.2995 ext 12) or Judy Bowes (202.362.4695) if there is someone whom you think might benefit, or if you are interested in learning about the expectations, qualifications and training required of a companion.
Rides to Church
Anyone seeking to be connected to another parishioner for the purpose of receiving a ride to church on Sunday needs to let Susan know of your need. And, of course, anyone interested in providing transportation for a needy member should also let Susan know. Mobility is such a basic fact for most of us that we never give it a second thought. Meeting this need for others is a vital and straightforward gift of grace that some among us are in humble need of receiving.
Won't you consider participating in this simple act of kindness? If so, contact Susan Blue at 202.232.2995 ext 12.
